DownThemAll: DownThemAll! 2.0.1

DownThemAll! 2.0.1 was released. It is a maintenance release.

The file is digitally signed by Nils Maier and has a SHA-1 hash of
9648ca7500bd5ca70819ab5a5e05a56d8746ef17.

Compatibility

DownThemAll! 2.0.1 is compatible with

  • Firefox
    3.5 – 4.0
  • Seamonkey
2.0 – 2.1b2 (limited support for the development versions, limited functionality)

Limitations

  • The bleeding edge applications (such as Minefield) are not thoroughly tested by us
  • Firefox 4 support is still ongoing, as there is no stable Firefox 4 release yet, and things still change quite often

Bug fixes and changes

  • *flatcurl* renaming mask was fixed
  • OSX: Tools menu icons were fixed
  • Added downloads are scrolled into the view again
  • Access keys added back
  • Dropdowns histories (Directory, Mask, Fast Filtering):
    • If the “Number of Entries to keep” preference is 0 upon upgrade, it will be reset to the default (5). This will only happen once. You may change it back afterwards. This is to accommodate users who inadvertently set it to 0, and now wonder why their histories aren’t stored any more
    • If the Preference is set to 0, then the default values will be used.
  • The Expose DownThemAll! in the User-Agent preference is now turned off by default. Some naive authenticating proxy servers and web applications stopped working when turned on.
  • The Remove-menus in the manager are now split-menus: You can click the menu item to launch the default action, or click or hover the sub-menu arrow to get to the more fine-grained actions
  • Fixes concerning some third party themes
  • Updated locales, adding French and Traditional Chinese translations
  • Couple of Firefox 4 fixes
  • Minor improvements and fixes

High memory consumption (in Windows 7)

There were multiple reports that using DownThemAll! causes a high memory consumption in Windows 7. This is caused by a bug in the Windows 7 Filtering Platform (WFP), which some software, especially Anti-Virus tools, uses to filter incoming traffic (for malicious content).

DownThemAll! isn’t actually buggy in this regard, nor does it explicitly trigger this bug. However since DownThemAll! is often used to download large files using multiple connections this windows bug becomes more visible.

Microsoft released a hotfix for this, which we recommend you install if you’re affected by this:
Knowledge Base article with download link.
The bugfix hence is supposed to fix any high memory consumption you may also be experiencing with other download managers or internet tools.
We are not sure if this hotfix is also provided via the Windows Update service.

Thanks to one of our users for pointing this out.

Furthermore there are several (old versions of) other add-ons which cause a high memory consumption, most notably old versions of Firebug and similar addons that store information about http requests (and most downloads are just that) and several Anti-Virus add-ons automatically installed into your browser when you install the Anti-Virus/Firewall software itself. It is recommended to update these addons to their latest version and/or disable/remove them if nothing else helps.

Thank you…

…for trying this new maintenance release.

Please, as always, file any bugs with our bug tracker.
